Liberated Creatives received its first grant from 417 Bridge Builders to teach at their annual Black History Summer Academy (BHSA)! Creative Founder Keisha McMillen, led teen girls on how to create personalized journals inspired by the National Negro Women’s Council’s periodicals, “Aframerican Journals” for ‘Standing in Adversity.’

From 1940 to 1947, the National Negro Women’s Council created a series of periodicals called “Aframerican Journals.” The purpose of these journals was to create a platform for black women to freely express their thoughts on politics, art, education, and more. Members of the Black History Summer Academy used collage materials to decorate and blank journals to be used as personal guides they can use to remind them how to stand up for themselves in moments of facing adversity. For these journals the teens focused on radical self-care, self-worth affirmations, a moment in history that reflects modern times, artistic expression, personal reviews on something their proud of, and establishing solidarity in sisterhood and community.

“It was very exciting to see both the teens and supporting teachers become proud and passionate about their journals. Statements such as, ‘It’s like junk journaling, I do this all the time at home!’ Or, ‘Ms. Keisha, can I take some of these supplies home so I can continue working on my journal?’ had me smiling from ear to ear. It was very special to watch everybody’s inner child come out to create something personal with confidence. I hope to refine this project and offer it as a workshop for teens and adults in the future.”
