Exploring Astrology, Creativity, and DIY Divination: A Conversation with Misty Lane

Q & A Interview with Misty Lane (Condensed Version)

“Astrology isn’t about predicting your fate—it’s about becoming the creative director of your life.”

- Misty Lane, Astrologer

We recently sat down with astrologer and creative visionary Misty Lane ahead of our upcoming DIY Oracle Card-Making Workshop—a collaborative event hosted by Liberated Creatives and Mercurial Girl Studios. Misty blends astrology with collage art to create deeply personal and empowering tools for self-reflection, and we were thrilled to dive into her world of cosmic storytelling, intuition, and artistic synthesis.

Astrology as Pattern Recognition (Not Just “Woo”)

Misty began her astrology journey as a casual learner in 2017, eventually deepening her studies through Kepler College, one of the oldest astrology schools in North America. Today, she offers astrological consultations through her business, Mercurial Girl Studios.

A common misconception she works to clarify? “People think astrology is a belief system,” Misty explains. “But it’s a pattern-tracking system—more like reading a clock than reading your fate.” For her, astrology is rooted in human observation: “We behave in predictable patterns based on timing, and astrology maps those patterns.”

Astrology + Art = Storytelling Magic

One of Misty’s most unique offerings is the way she merges visual art with astrology. She uses collage as a storytelling device to interpret birth charts or planetary movements, allowing for a more intuitive and creative way to process astrological insights.

“Learning astrology gave me a narrative to explore artistically,” she says. “Each natal chart is like a celestial screenplay—the script to the movie of your life. Once you understand your 'script,' you can direct the story more intentionally.”

This approach, she believes, reflects the evolution of modern astrology: no longer exclusive to royalty or academics, it’s now a tool for anyone—especially creatives—looking to better understand themselves.

Helping Artists Unblock Creativity

When working with artists facing creative blocks, Misty often starts by looking at Venus and Neptune in the natal chart. “Venus tells me what you’re drawn to and how you experience beauty or harmony. Neptune reveals your fantasy world—how you filter reality through dreams, symbols, or abstraction.”

From there, she explores houses and aspects that might suggest an affinity for writing, performance, or visual art. “It’s a personalized map to your creative flow,” she adds.

Tarot, Oracle Cards & Astrology: What’s the Difference?

While astrology and oracle cards are often grouped under the “divination” umbrella, Misty sees key distinctions. “Astrology is more technical, like data analysis. Oracle cards are more intuitive—a way to check in with how you're feeling and what story you're telling yourself right now.”

Still, she finds magic in combining the two. “If a client isn’t sure what to focus on, I can pull a card to guide the session. One card I created shows a woman dancing in front of a volcano, and the phrase reads something like 'Shining in the dark.' That can point us toward the more shadowy parts of the birth chart—places where growth and power are waiting.”

The Rise of Astrology for the People

Why does it feel like astrology is having a moment right now?

According to Misty, it’s the Internet. “Social media made astrology more accessible, but it also oversimplified it,” she says. “Now, we’re moving beyond sun sign memes and becoming more astrology-literate—learning how to read our charts and use them intentionally.”
